BMI, BMR, and TDEE are often shown together, but they answer different questions. BMI relates weight to height. BMR estimates energy use at rest. TDEE extends a resting estimate with an activity factor.

None of the three directly measures body composition, metabolic health, or an individual calorie requirement. They are reference estimates whose usefulness depends on the question you are asking.

BMI compares weight with height

Body mass index uses a short equation:

BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ height in meters²

For adults, the result is commonly mapped to population-level reference categories. BMI does not use age, activity, or sex, and it cannot distinguish muscle from body fat. The CDC describes it as one potential health indicator that should be considered alongside medical history, behaviors, examination findings, and other factors.

Use a BMI calculator when you specifically need the height-to-weight ratio or its reference category. Do not use it as a diagnosis or a complete description of health.

BMR estimates resting energy use

Basal metabolic rate is the energy the body would use under standardized resting conditions. The Smile Tools calculator uses the Mifflin–St Jeor predictive equation, which includes weight, height, age, and a sex-specific coefficient.

Because BMR is predicted rather than measured, two people with the same inputs can still have different real energy expenditure. Body composition, health conditions, medication, temperature, and measurement conditions can all matter.

The BMR calculator is most useful as a transparent starting estimate. A clinical metabolic test answers a different, more precise question.

TDEE adds an activity assumption

Total daily energy expenditure begins with a resting estimate and multiplies it by an activity factor. That factor tries to represent normal movement, work, exercise, and other daily activity.

TDEE estimate = BMR estimate × activity factor

The activity choice is usually the least certain input. People may interpret labels such as “lightly active” differently, and one unusual week may not represent a sustainable routine. The TDEE calculator therefore provides a reference, not a calorie prescription.

How to interpret the results responsibly

Treat calculated values as ranges and starting points rather than exact targets. Recheck units, avoid reading more precision into the result than the formula supports, and consider trends alongside context.

For health or nutrition decisions—especially during pregnancy, illness, medication changes, eating-disorder recovery, or major weight change—work with a qualified healthcare professional who can evaluate information the calculator does not have.

The formulas are useful because they are simple and consistent. Their limits come from that same simplicity.
